What’s your recent favorite song on repeat?

제목은 딱히 없고 유튜브 뮤직에서 피아노 연주를 랜덤하게 들어요. 지하철에서 책을 읽는 시간이 많은데, 그동안 에어팟을 노이즈 캔슬링으로 설정 하고 음악을 들으며 책에 집중하는 시간이 좋거든요. 그럴 때 듣는 노래들인데 생각해 보니 잔잔하고 무거운 멜로디가 느리고 길게 반복되는 음악들을 선호하는 것 같아요. 책을 읽는 속도에 맞춰야 해서 그런 거 같기도 하고... 제 작업 중에 그림자를 기록하는 걸 풀샷으로 찍은 영상이 있는데 그 영상에 넣으면 참 잘 어울리겠다 생각한 적도 몇 번 있거든요. 아마 그래서 더 좋은 걸까요?

There is no particular song, I listen to random playlists with piano music. I spend a lot of time reading books on the subway, and I like to focus on the book while listening to it. I think I prefer music with calm, heavy melodies that are repeated slowly for long periods of time. I think it's because I have to match the speed of reading the book... I have a full-shot video of recording shadows during my work, and there have been a few times when I thought it would be great if I added the tunes to that video. Maybe that's why?

저는 세상의 현상을 탐구하는 것에 흥미가 있어요. 과학적 현상에 대한 탐구, 사회적 현상에 대한 탐구 그리고 인간에 대한 탐구들에 관심을 가지고 있어요. 이 모든 것이 연결되어 있거든요. 인간을 알기 위해서는 인간이 속해있는 사회를 알아야 하고, 인간을 둘러싸고 있는 공간을 알아야 하고, 인간이 속해있는 사회를 알기 위해서는 또 다시 인간 본연의 심리를 알아야 하고, 인간 본연의 심리를 알기 위해서는 생물학적 고찰이 필요하고, … 적어도 지구상에서 인간의 손이 닿지 않는 것이 희박한 지금에서는 인간에 대한 고찰이 세상에 대한 생각이기 때문에 저는 그 모든 것들을 들여다보는데 흥미가 있어요. 그것들을 관찰을 통해 수집하기도 하고, 책을 통해 지식을 얻기도 하고, 그림을 그려나가며 상상의 도움을 받아 생각을 확장하기도 해요. 그리고 그것들을 연결 지어 인간에 대해 이야기하는 것을 좋아해요.

I am interested in exploring phenomenons in the world; Exploration of scientific phenomena, social phenomena, and exploration of humans- because all of this is connected. In order to know humans, we must know the society to which humans belong, the space surrounding humans, and to understand the society, we must again know the original psychology of humans, and to understand the psychology of humans, biological considerations are necessary. It is necessary... As for now that there is so little on earth that is left untouched by humans, the world can be seen through contemplating humans. So I am interested in looking into all of those things. I collect the data through observation, gain knowledge through books, and expand the thoughts by drawing with the help of imagination. And I like connecting them to talk about humans.

What is your personal language (form of art)?

형식에 제한을 두진 않지만 이야기해야 한다면 그림자라고 할 수 있겠네요. 세상 (공간) 에 대한 연구는 주로 그림자를 이용해 표하고, 사물에 대한 탐구는 사물 자체를 변형시키거나 새롭게 만드는 방식으로 표현합니다.

There are no restrictions on the format, but if I had to talk about it, I would say it is a shadow. The study of the world (space) is mainly expressed using shadows, and the exploration of objects is manifested by transforming the objects themselves or creating the new of it.

Which artist or artwork sparked your interest in art?

늘 미술에 대한 열망이 있긴 했지만, 제대로 작업(미술)을 해보고 싶다는 가슴 뛰는 생각을 가지게 된 것은 올라퍼 엘리아슨의 작품을 본 직후였어요. 리움미술관에서 그의 전시를 처음 봤는데 중력을 거스르는 분수, 무지개를 만들어내는 수증기, 위로 가늘 건지 아래로 가는 건지 도통 모르겠는 회전하는 나선형과 같은 저에게 엄청난 충격이었어요. 엘리아슨은 인위적으로 자연 현상을 재현하거나 왜곡하고, 인공적인 소재들을 섬세하게 조합하여 전혀 새로운 경험을 선사했어요. 그의 작업은 단순히 설치된 물체들로 보이지만, 자세히 들여다보면 자연, 과학, 철학으로 이어지며 깊은 사유를 자극하는 작품들이었습니다. 저도 그처럼 다양한 분야를 탐구하고, 나만의 방법론을 만들어 관객에게 전달할 수 있다면, 그것이야말로 가슴 뛰는 일일 거라고 생각했어요.

Although I always had a desire for art, it was only after seeing Olafur Eliasson's work that I had my heart flutter to get my hands on creating my artwork. I saw his exhibition for the first time at the Leeum Museum of Art and it was a huge shock to me, witnessing a fountain that defies gravity, a piece of water vapor that creates a rainbow, and a rotating spiral that I had no idea whether it is going upward or downward. Eliasson artificially reproduced or distorted natural phenomena and delicately combined artificial materials to create a completely new experience. His works appear to be simply installed objects, but if you look closely, they are connected to nature, science, and philosophy and stimulate deep thinking. I thought it would be truly exciting if I could explore such diverse fields, create my own methodology, and convey it to the audience.e.

제 작업에서 그림자는 단순한 형태나 빛의 부재가 아니라, 인간과 사물 간의 복잡한 상호작용을 탐구하는 매개체에요. 우리 삶에 인공광원이 들어온 순간부터, 밤과 낮의 경계가 모호해지기 시작했어요. 전구의 발명 이후, 사람들은 잠의 필요성을 잊고 더 많은 시간을 활동에 할애하기 시작했죠. 이런 변화가 우리의 생활 방식에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지, 그리고 그 과정에서 어떤 새로운 습관이나 사물이 등장했는지에 대해 생각해 보는 것은 매우 중요해요. 그림자는 우리와 사물 사이의 관계를 비추고, 가끔은 우리가 몰랐던 새로운 시각을 제공해 주는 역할을 합니다.

예전엔 태양이 주된 빛의 원천이어서, 낮에만 그림자를 볼 수 있었어요. 하지만 인공광원이 발명된 지금, 우리는 밤에도 그림자를 볼 수 있게 됐어요. 심지어는 복제된 인공광원들로 인해 여러개의 선명한 그림자를 볼 수 있게 됐죠. 빛의 갯수만큼 늘어나는 그림자의 특성상, 여러개의 인공광원은 여러 그림자를 생성하며, 이들은 서로 중첩되는 현상을 만들어냅니다. 이것은 과거에는 경험할 수 없었던 특별한 현상이에요.

제 작업은 바로 이런 관점을 탐구하는 거예요.우리가 사물과 어떻게 상호작용하고 그 상호작용이 우리의 세계를 어떻게 변화시키는지 같은것요. 인공광원의 탄생으로 인해 발생하는 복잡한 그림자 패턴은 우리가 물리적 세계와 어떻게 연결되어 있는지, 그리고 인간의 발명이 자연에 어떤 새로운 차원을 추가하는지를 보여줘요. 이런 과정을 통해, 우리는 자연과 기술, 과학과 예술의 경계에서 새로운 통찰을 얻을 수 있어요. 이것이 제가 그림자를 탐구하는 이유입니다.

In my work, shadow is not a simple form or absence of light, but a medium to explore complex interactions between humans and objects. From the moment artificial light sources entered our lives, the boundary between night and day began to blur. People began to forget the need for sleep and started devoting more time to activities. It is very important to think about how these changes have affected our lifestyle and what new habits or objects have emerged in the process. Shadows illuminate the relationships between us and objects, and sometimes provide us with new perspectives we didn't know existed.

In the past, the sun was the main source of light, so shadows could only be seen during the day. But now we can see shadows even at night. Furthermore, duplicated artificial light sources made it possible to see multiple, clear shadows. Due to the nature of shadows that increase in proportion to the number of lights, multiple artificial light sources create multiple shadows, which overlap each other. This is a special phenomenon that has never been experienced in the past.

My work explores this perspective: how we interact with things and how that interaction changes our world. The complex shadow patterns created by artificial light sources show us how connected we are to the physical world and how human inventions add new dimensions to nature. Through this process, we can gain new insights at the boundaries between nature and technology, science and art. This is why I explore shadows

행복이요! 그러기 위해서는 내 인생을 나답게 사는 것, 주체적인 것, 혼자서도 괜찮은 것, 긍정성, 만족하는 법, 거짓되지 않은 것, 과 같은 많은 것들이 필요하더라고요. 작업은 저를 있는 그대로 드러내는 것이다 보니, 물론 영향을 미칩니다. 또 그 마음 상태를 유지할 수 있어야 작업도 똑바로 되는 것 같고요.

Happiness! In order to do that, I need many things. Such as living my life as myself, being independent, being okay with being alone, positivity, being satisfied, and always being true. Since my work exposes me as I am, the values impact me highly. Also, I do think I have to maintain that state of mind to be able to work properly.

When do you feel free?

What makes you continue to stand as an artist?

작업이 직업이면서 동시에 취미인 게 가장 크지 않을까요. 읽고, 적고, 그리고 만들어내는 건 가만히 있어도 하게 되는 즐거운 활동 같은 거예요. 동시에 작업은 저 자신과의 대화 같은 거예요. 일상적인 대화 같은 것이다 보니, 무언가를 위해서라기보단 자연스러운 습관... 같은거여서 계속해서 작업을 할 수 있고, 그래서 계속할 수 있는 게 아닐까요?

The biggest part is that my work is both a job and a hobby to me. Reading, writing, and creating are like fun activities that you can do even when doing nothing. At the same time, my work is like having a conversation with myself. Like this, it's more of a natural, daily habit, rather than the matter of working for the sake of something. That keeps me working, and that's probably what makes me to move on.

These days, it takes work to keep focused on one activity for a long while.

집에 가만히 혼자 있습니다...저는 심심하면 작업을 하거든요... 또는, 반대되는 말이긴 하지만 이것저것 많이 보러 다녀요. 그러면 생각이 샘솟아서, 이것도 해봐야지 저것도 해봐야지 하면서 메모장에 열심히 적고 있는 나를 발견해요. 그걸 집에 돌아와서 노트에 기록해 두거나, 실험해 보지 않고는 못 참거든요.

I stay home alone, and when I feel bored, I just hop on to work. Otherwise, although it's a little contradictory, I go out and try to see different things. Then an idea pops up in my mind, and I find myself taking inpsirational notes, thinking I should try out this and that. When I get home, I can't resist myself from documenting the writings on my notebook, or from experimenting with new ideas.

'Modern Silk Pants'가 가장 기억에 남아요. 바지에 생기는 무늬가 수채화의 물결같기도 하고, 도자기의 글레이즈 같기도 하더라구요. 제가 가지고있는 작업의 스타일과 비슷해서 처음 입어보자마자 마음에 쏙 들었어요. 걸을때마다 차르르 하는 느낌도 한없이 자유롭고 싶어지는 제 마음을 대변해주는 것 같아서 기분이 좋았습니다.

I was impressed with 'Modern Silk Pants'. The patterns on the pants seeemed like waves of watercolor, or a glaze of a ceramic. It had a similar sense to the style of the work I do, so I liked it as soon as I tried it on for the first time. I felt nice because the cool feeling coming from when walking seemed to represent my desire to become infinitely free.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years from now?
